Is counselling for me?
You do not have to be in crisis or on the verge of one before choosing to have therapy, although often this is when people do look for support from a professional. If you are currently struggling to overcome a particular issue in your life, however big or small you may feel it is, then counselling could benefit you.
What can I expect?
Listening carefully is the largest part of what all counsellors do. We are all guilty to a greater or lesser extent of not listening to our own needs and your counsellor will work with you to work out what these might be. Talking is one of the main ways we will do this.
Your counsellor does not give advice. Together you will decide what steps you want to take next. The counsellor will always let the work proceed at the clients pace.
What’s Dorset Wellbeing’s approach to counselling?
Good question. Our approach to counselling is integrative, meaning that when we work with a client, we use a variety of methods instead of just one model. This is based in our belief that every individual is unique and therefore every client’s process should be unique too.
Beyond this, at Dorset Wellbeing, we place significant emphasis on the relationship between us, the counsellor, and you, the client (a person centred approach). This relationship is based on warmth, empathy and non-judgemental acceptance, where you will be free to explore all thoughts and feelings without rejection or condemnation. Alongside this we believe that change and growth can be made possible through the unlocking of past experiences, historic trauma and unconscious behaviours. Through well practiced techniques, your Dorset Wellbeing counsellor will work hard with you to help deal with these ‘stuck’ emotions so you can begin your journey towards wellbeing.
We also receive regular training and supervision to ensure our continual professional development and use up to date research to provide the most effective evidence based practice.
What will it cost?
In the first instance you will be offered a free half hour meeting with your counsellor to briefly discuss your situation. It is important that you feel comfortable with your choice of counsellor and there is no obligation to proceed after this meeting. Thereafter the cost is £45 per session (there may be some concessions available).
How long will it last?
This depends on many different things so it is hard to say. A few people attend for a short period of time, between 6 or 8 sessions, others for longer, between 20 or 30 sessions and some others for much longer. You will meet weekly with your counsellor for a 50 min session. You may agree at the start of the work how long the work will be or, more often, you will decide with your counsellor as you proceed when you are ready to end the sessions. Will it be confidential?
Yes. Everything said during a session is strictly confidential between you and your therapist according to the ethical guidelines of BACP and UKCP. This will only be broken if it has been discussed and you have given consent, or if we are compelled by a court of law, or where the information is of such gravity that you are in danger of being at potential harm to yourself or others. We will endeavour to discuss any such incident before confidentiality is broken.
